Infinity Tattoo Meaning
The infinity sign is a line with no beginning and no end. As a tattoo it promises that something — a love, a friendship, a memory — will never run out.
Where the symbol comes from
The sign ∞, called the lemniscate, was introduced into mathematics by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1655 to mean an endless quantity. Its looping shape echoes older symbols of eternity such as the ouroboros, the snake that eats its own tail.
Eternal love and friendship
Infinity is one of the most common couple, family and best-friend tattoos — a promise of a bond that lasts forever. Matching infinity signs are often worn by two people.
Infinity with names, a heart or a word
Names written along the loop, a heart in one half, a feather or birds flying out of it, or a word like "faith", "family" or "love" make the symbol personal.
