Our Lady of Guadalupe Tattoo Meaning
The Virgin of Guadalupe is one of the most loved religious images in the Americas, and California and Los Angeles are among the places that search for her tattoo the most.
The story
According to Catholic tradition, in December 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City. As a sign for the bishop she told him to gather roses that were blooming out of season, and when he opened his cloak, the tilma, her image was printed on it. The tilma is kept today in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and her feast day is December 12.
What the image means
Every element has meaning. The rays of light surrounding her — she is "clothed with the sun". The crescent moon under her feet. The mantle covered with stars. Her hands joined in prayer and her lowered eyes — humility. The angel holding her mantle at her feet.
What a Guadalupe tattoo means
Faith and protection — she is called on as a mother who watches over her children. Motherhood and family — many people wear her in honor of their own mother or grandmother. Heritage — for Mexicans and Mexican Americans she is also a symbol of identity and pride.
Guadalupe in Chicano black and grey
The Virgin of Guadalupe is one of the central images of Chicano black and grey tattooing in Los Angeles, often with roses, praying hands, rosaries, clouds and script. Her full figure with the rays around her suits the back, the chest, the forearm and the upper arm; a portrait of her face fits the forearm or the calf.
