Zeus Tattoo Meaning: Power, Justice and the Thunderbolt
Zeus was the king of the Greek gods: lord of the sky, wielder of the thunderbolt, father of gods and men. From his throne on Olympus he kept the order of the world. A Zeus tattoo speaks of power and authority, but also of justice, protection and the weight of leadership.
The child who was hidden
Zeus was born to the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Cronus had been warned that one of his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed each of them at birth. When Zeus was born, Rhea hid him on the island of Crete and gave Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, which he swallowed instead.
Zeus grew up in secret. When he came of age, he forced his father to bring up the brothers and sisters he had swallowed: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon. The story is the root of his meaning: the one who survived against all odds and returned to claim his place.
The war against the Titans
Zeus and his siblings fought the Titans in a long war for the rule of the universe, the Titanomachy. He freed the Cyclopes from their prison beneath the earth, and in gratitude they forged his thunderbolt. With it the Olympians won, and the defeated Titans were cast down into Tartarus.
The brothers divided the world by lot. Poseidon received the sea, Hades the underworld, and Zeus the sky, and with it the rule over all.
Thunderbolt, eagle and oak
The thunderbolt is his weapon and his voice: sudden, overwhelming power from above, and divine judgement striking the guilty.
The eagle is his sacred bird, the king of birds for the king of gods. It sits beside his throne and carries out his will.
The oak was his sacred tree. At Dodona, his oldest oracle, priests listened to the rustling of the oak leaves to hear his answers.
The sceptre and the throne mark him as the ruler who keeps the order of the cosmos.
Guardian of justice and of guests
Zeus was more than raw power. The Greeks honoured him as the guardian of oaths, of justice and of hospitality. As Zeus Xenios he protected strangers and guests: to harm a guest was to offend the king of the gods himself. Kings were said to receive their authority from him, and he was expected to punish those who broke their word.
His punishments were legendary. When Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity, Zeus had him chained to a rock, where an eagle came to devour his liver every day.
The father of heroes
Zeus was famous for his many loves, and he often took other forms to approach them. He came to Leda as a swan and carried off Europa as a white bull; the continent of Europe still bears her name. His children included gods such as Athena, Apollo and Artemis, and heroes such as Heracles and Perseus. Zeus is the father figure of Greek myth in every sense: powerful, protective and far from perfect.
Olympia and Jupiter
The Olympic Games were held in his honour at Olympia, where his temple held a colossal statue of Zeus enthroned, made of gold and ivory by the sculptor Phidias. It was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Romans identified Zeus with their own supreme god, Jupiter, and the largest planet in the solar system carries his name.
